We have reached a crossroads.
The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, a.k.a. DACA, is an American immigration policy that allows individuals who entered the country illegally as minors to receive a renewable two-year get out of deportation free pass and a work permit.
According to many news reports, approximately 800,000 individuals are enrolled in the DACA program and the world as we know it will end if the U.S. doesn’t give these people a path to citizenship.
President Trump put forward a plan last week that would allow citizenship to DACA pass holders since their immigration status is no fault of their own. The president’s proposal also hikes the total number allowed for amnesty to around 1.8 million people. If the President believes that these DACA participants have paid enough of a price to become U.S. Citizens if they want, then the Congress should support this humanitarian decision.
In exchange for granting this amnesty, President Trump is proposing that Congress authorize him to strengthen border security by approving a $25 billion trust fund and move the United States to a merit-based system of immigration. The President should be provided what he says he needs to secure the nation by the Congress.
The solution is sitting in front of us. If the DACA is revoked because the U.S. Congress cannot commit to securing U.S. borders, then the President should deport all people here illegally in accordance with current law until Congress changes it.
Make Congress do its job.
